What To Plant

Native plants work for you, and for all the animals and insects that depend on them, when the right plant is planted in the right spot.

Choosing the right plants can be overwhelming given all the considerations: sun exposure, soil moisture levels, bloom times and the size and potential spread of the plants.

This page is intended as a guide to help you get started with your native plant garden and to choose the right plants for you.

This section also discusses combinations of ground covers to use in place of mulch and layering to your native garden -- what the Wild Seed Project refers to as guilds.  For more information see Native Ground Covers for Northeast Landscapes: A Wild Seed Project Guide, by Anna Fialkoff and Heather McCargo (2022).
