American Spikenard may look like a shrub at its fullest--up to 6 feet tall and wide--but like any other perennial flower it will die back every winter -- after a full season of flowering and producing tasty fruits.
The creamy blooms appear mid-summer. Berries follow, emerging green and turning red, finally maturing to a dark purple. The different colors often appear in the same clusters.
American Spikenard will spread slowly over time by rhizomes and seeding, forming thickets. Its roots are aromatic, and its fruits, leaves and roots are all edible. Just one plant is needed for fruit.
Fun fact: The roots have been used to flavor teas and as an ingredient in root beer.
