Jack-in-the-pulpit is a key choice for a shade garden with its unusual, green-and-purple striped hood (the pulpit) covering a spike (the Jack) -- resembling a hooded preacher.  Male and female plants are needed if the female is to produce brilliant red berries that present mid-summer and attract birds and mammals. Good for a shade, woodland or rain garden.
