Impatiens capensis, with its beautiful orange blooms, also is called Touch Me Not because one touch will trigger the pods to blast out the seeds.

Another common name, Jewelweed, refers to the clinging droplets of rain or dew sparkling along the leaves.  Lovely after a rainfall.

Jewelweed is an annual and thus naturally has a long bloom time—from June to frost. It likes moist to wet soil and dappled or even full shade. It readily self seeds and quickly will fill a shady spot.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are among its most popular visitors along with bees and butterflies.

Fun fact: Juice in the plant’s stem has been used to relieve itching from poison ivy and athlete’s foot.
