Cottonwood is a large landscape tree so-named because of the white cotton-like wads surrounding its seeds.
This material helps seeds disperse in spring -- what the Native Plant Trust calls a "snowstorm of cotton in early June."Cottonwood makes for a great shade tree in a large landscape. It does not tolerate urban stresses.
